To qualify for the J-1 visa, trainee candidates should:
- Have sufficient scholastic preparation to participate in the designated program.
- Have sufficient proficiency in the English language to participate in the program.
- Demonstrate binding ties to a residence in a foreign country that the candidate has no intention of abandoning.

Please Note: In some cases other J-1 sponsorship organizations may have additional requirements. Prior to application, candidates are encouraged to contact the J-1 sponsorship organization directly if any of the following conditions exists in order to discuss their chances of qualifying for the program:
- Candidate has been out of his/her home country for an extended period of time (with the possible exception of studying outside their home countries if they are still enrolled in school at the time of application, or if the U.S. training is required for graduation).
- Candidate has not been employed or enrolled in school for more than three months.
- Candidate has little or no hospitality experience.
- Candidate has no recent hospitality experience.
- Candidate has recently been in the US on a visa other than a tourist visa.
